Basic Principles and Practices for Automatic External Defibrillators (AED)

Automatic External DefibrillatorsA review of the basic principles and best practices for automatic external defibrillators (AED) begins with a review of state and local regulations. Laws and regulations at the state and local level usually require:

* AED operations training
* Community Coordination with Emergency Medical Service (EMS)
* Medical direction
* Proper AED record keeping for every time the AED is used

You should notify your local EMS about your plan to implement an AED program in your organization or facility. Some locations require the EMS to be notified. Be sure to find out the proper procedure in your area. Your local EMS will want a list of AED locations within your facility. They may want to play a larger role in your program by coordinating drills with your response team.

When forming your response team it is important for team members to be clearly identified and properly trained according to established regulations in the use of the AED. The size of your response team will be directly determined by the size of your facility or organization. Response team members will be made up of a mixed group of managers, office staff members, and maintenance workers.

Location of the AED should be in a large area where people congregate. You will not want to place the AED in an area with a lot of traffic such as a main entrance or hallway. Response time is important in saving the life of a victim of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). Applying the AED and delivering the first shock should be done in at least 4-5 minutes although the best likelihood of survival means shocking the heart in under three minutes.

Anyone who receives proper training in the use of AED may join the first response team. However, the program must be directed by a medical doctor who will provide medical oversight for your program. The medical doctor will sign off on the program, ensure proper training in the use of the AED, evaluate data when the AED has been used, and inform the team about any medical improvements.

Managing the AED program requires the appointment of a manager whose job it will be to keep the equipment checked and in working order, ensure proper training and refresher training of response team members, and creating awareness in the organization by educating all staff members about the AED program. Lives can be saved when all staff members are informed and understand what to do during a SCA event.

Blood

Blood is truly the source of life. It carries oxygen to the tissues and removes carbon dioxide and other wastes. The course of the flow of blood is a mainstay of anyone who studies health. Every medical school begins with classes in anatomy and physiology which at times will focus on learning about the blood.

Blood is born in the bone marrow. From there it enters the circulatory system. There its task will be as a carrier. Most people think that blood is bright red, but it only is so in the presence of oxygen. In the oxygen poor blood areas of the body, it is blue. This is why veins are blue and people whose circulation is cut off to a certain body part will have that part turn a purplish hue. Even if a vein is cut, once the blood comes in contact with oxygen from the air, it becomes its brilliant crimson.

The health of the body depends upon how well the blood flows. It makes its way through the heart which pumps the blood to the lungs. There, it picks up oxygen molecules which attach themselves to the hemoglobin in the red blood cells. This is what give red blood cells their name. The hemoglobin is a protein which requires the ingestion of iron to be made. A person who takes in too little iron will have poor health and become anemic, since their blood will not be able to hold as much oxygen.

After the lungs, the blood flows through the arteries into smaller canals called capillaries which surround the tissues. It releases the oxygen there, picks up carbon dioxide and returns through the veins to the lungs, via the heart.

The blood is critical to the health of all, and knowing more about how it works can help one to better their habits to improve their health and prevent disease

The International Red Cross Movement

With every disaster or war one organization always hits the news. The Red Cross is known as an international humanitarian movement with the mission to protect human life and health. It strives to ensure that human beings are respected, and they do all they can to prevent, or alleviate human suffering, all without discrimination of nationality, race, religious convictions, class or political views.

Many people use the term “International Red Cross” when in reality there is no such organization officially bearing that name. In reality, the International Red Cross consists of a number of legally independent district organizations who are all united within the Movement, and are only linked together because they have several basic principles, statutes, objectives, symbols and governing organs in common.

The International Red Cross Movement consists of the Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), and the National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, which exists in almost every country in the world, including Croatia. The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement promote equal status for all Societies worldwide, which includes sharing equal responsibilities and the duty to help one another.

The International Red Cross Society of Croatia has been active in the country since 1878. During that time it performed humanitarian activities such as bringing relief to wounded and sick soldiers, actions which were recognized as being in compliance with the internationally accepted principles of the Movement.

The Red Cross Society of Croatia, a large national, humanitarian and voluntary organization comprising County, City and Municipal Red Cross branches, including a district in Vukovar, is not government funded. It operates through its many volunteers, supporters and professionals who have helped many people over the years, during times of personal strife, war conflicts and natural disasters.
